Iino will not seek reelection

Killingworth First Selectwoman Cathy Iino announced today that she will not seek reelection this fall.

“Serving this town and working with this wonderful community as first selectwoman for the last 12 years has been a great privilege,” Iino said.

“Over the next several months, I will continue to give my full attention to the pressing issues facing the town,” she said.

“Killingworth has been fortunate to have Cathy’s leadership for over a decade,” said Annie Stirna, chair of the Killingworth Democratic Town Committee. “She has led the town with energy, integrity, transparency, and fairness. Today, Killingworth is strong fiscally and institutionally. We wish Cathy all the best as she moves on.”

“A number of people have expressed interest in running for first selectperson. The Killingworth Democrats look forward to presenting a strong slate of candidates for the November election,” Stirna added.

Longtime KDTC member passes away

Barbara Klein, 90, passed away Dec. 18, 2020, with her husband Martin at her side.

Barbara was a long time Killingworth resident and KDTC member.  For those who knew her and those who did not, her life represents public service at its best and a life well lived.

She grew up in the Flatbush neighborhood of Brooklyn and graduated from Erasmus High School in 1948. She received a degree in zoology from Hunter College in 1952, where she was active in the Gilbert and Sullivan Society.

Barbara worked at the Sloan Kettering Cancer Center on nicotine research following college. She married Martin “Marty” Klein April 4, 1954. They initially lived on their egg farm in Madison prior to moving to Killingworth in 1964, where they resided until 2020, before moving to the Guilford House Assisted Living facility in Guilford.

Barbara worked side by side with her husband on their farm in Madison. She was always active in the Town of Killingworth as one of the founders of the Killingworth Nursery School; member of the Democratic Town Committee, Public Health Agency, Board of Assessment Appeals, and Water Pollution Control Authority; representative to the Regional Mental Health Board and Board of Directors of the Killingworth Foundation; and in various other positions. She served on the Board of Selectmen from 1973 to 1975. Barbara was also a justice of the peace and was highly sought as a wedding officiant as she always personalized the service to match the character of each couple. She received a master’s degree in public health from the Hartford Graduate Center.

Barbara wrote many of the reports for numerous agricultural consulting projects on which she and Marty worked and which brought them to Peru, Boliva, Ghana, Nigeria, Poland, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and Turkmenistan. In 1975, she and Marty toured China with a group of American farmers, and in 1989, Barbara and Marty served in the Peace Corps in Tunisia. In the 1990s they were volunteers for VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) at the Knox Park Foundation in Hartford, helping to start community gardens.

Barbara and Marty enjoyed traveling and took many trips abroad and throughout the United States, spending a couple of weeks each winter at the hot springs in Thermopolis, Wyoming.

Barbara had a passion for knitting, sewing, gardening, and cooking and imparted her skills to her children and grandchildren, as well as to numerous others she met throughout her travels. She recorded many life stories in a blog from recent years known as “Best of Barbara,” and her recipes are memorialized in the cookbook, A Glub, Glub and a Shake, Shake.

Barbara is survived by her husband of 66 years, Martin Klein; 4 children, Lisa Winkler (Matthew), Naomi Klein (Pierre Darmon), David (Ioulia Loubkina), and Madeline Taylor (David); 9 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Donations can be made in her honor to Hunter College https://hunter.cuny.edu/give/ or to a charity of your own choosing.

August 2020 Primary and Absentee Ballots

Connecticut will hold its Presidential Primary Election on Tuesday, August 11, 2020.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Governor Ned Lamont signed an executive order allowing all registered Democrats and Republicans in Connecticut to obtain an absentee ballot for the August 11, 2020 primary. Secretary of the State Denise Merrill has mailed an absentee ballot application to every registered Democrat and Republican in the state to complete and return. These applications, which include postage-paid return envelopes, were sent via U.S. Postal Service and have started to appear in Killingworth mailboxes. A voter who requests an absentee ballot will receive their ballot (which will also include a postage paid return envelope) in the mail beginning on July 21, 2020.

Killingworth will also be installing a secure ballot drop box, located at Town Hall, to allow voters to deliver their absentee ballots in person without close personal contact. For those who would still like to appear in person to cast their vote, our polling place at Killingworth Elementary School will remain open, however, the ability to vote absentee will ensure that the democratic process continues safely and securely.

As always, Killingworth voters can contact the Town Clerk’s Office at 860-663-1765 x502 with any questions. Although currently closed to the public, the Town Clerk’s Office is still working every day and is happy to assist you in any way we can.

Super Tuesday Party on March 3

Dear SLDW Members, Friends and Supporters,

Join us on Tuesday night, March 3, from 7pm – 9pm for a Super Tuesday Gathering at The Scotch Plains Tavern in Essex, CT. Let’s all watch the primary returns on the big screen coming in from 16 states and participate in the #Ides of Trump call to action. See the details below!

Address: Scotch Plains Tavern, 124 Westbrook Road, Essex, CT 06426 (Across from the Essex IGA)

#IdesofTrump Call to Action! Bring your postcards or pink slips to this event and write your own special message to the pResident! On March 15th, each of us will mail Donald Trump a postcard that publicly expresses our opposition to him. And we, in vast numbers, from all corners of the world, will overwhelm the man with his unpopularity and failure. We will show the media and the politicians what standing with him — and against us — means. And most importantly, we will bury the White House post office in pink slips, all informing Donnie that he’s fired.

Each of us — every protester from every march, each congress calling citizen, every boycotter, volunteer, donor, and petition signer — if each of us writes even a single postcard and we put them all in the mail on the same day, March 15th, well: you do the math. No alternative fact or Russian translation will explain away our record-breaking, officially-verifiable, warehouse-filling flood of fury. Hank Aaron currently holds the record for fan mail, having received 900,000 pieces in a year. We’re setting a new record: over a million pieces in a day, with not a single nice thing to say.

So sharpen your wit, unsheathe your writing implements, and see if your sincerest ill-wishes can pierce Donald’s famously thin skin. Prepare for March 15th, 2020, a day hereafter to be known as #TheIdesOfTrump
